A 78 year old lady sitting in the window seat in an aircraft asked the 80 year old passenger sitting next to her, how old was he, to which the octogenarian responded by saying that he was young at heart and fit as a fiddle. We do not know if the lady was faintly planning to play the fiddle but are happy to feel that people who are young at heart can also remain fit even when they are living on borrowed time.
Keeping fit is important as keeping alive. And to do this, you do not have to pull down the heaven or invent a home made rocket launcher. Just a few minutes of exercise that suite your physical condition and good food habits is enough to keep you fit throughout your life. We know that the human body repairs itself and performs more efficiently with proper conditioning that is achieved through a program of regular exercise and good nutrition. This is particularly true for the muscular-skeletal system as well as the cardio- vascular pulmonary system. With exercise, our bones (joint bones and bones of the spinal column) are rebuilt and repair themselves. But, without exercise, they tend to become thin and porous - a condition known as osteoporosis.
Therefore, regardless of age or sex, we must exercise to remain fit. Recent research has found that you need a combination of weight training, aerobic exercise for strength & endurance and calisthenics (stretching, bending and twisting exercise) for flexibility. Studies have found that violent physical exertion is no more useful to gain and maintain fitness than moderate exercise.
Walking is good, since it can be done at your pace. It requires no equipment other than a pair of good walking shoes and it can be done at virtually any time. Walking strengthens muscles in the lower body, helps build new joint bones and tissues as also ward off or slow osteoporosis. Since walking only works the lower half of the body, other aerobic exercises that increase flexibility should be included in your routine.
Sustained aerobic exercises can help control diabetes since it aids in the metabolism of sucrose. What is more, exercise helps spur the production of human growth hormones which otherwise ceases to be produced after age 50.
Staying physically fit can give you a body that performs well and looks like those that of a person who is years younger.Copyright 2008, All Rights Reserved.
