Youth fitness has always been an important issue. Increasingly, thanks to a diet containing too much junk food, more and more Americans are becoming obese. There has been an alarming drop in youth fitness levels over the years. The good news is that, there is an increasing awareness and acceptance of this problem. An ever-increasing number of youths are visiting the gym to workout and drop extra pounds. But this does not seem to have solved the problem. The trend of giving in to junk foods continues. Modern day lifestyles have changed - we are constantly on the go. The youths are affected too, just like the adults. We are more likely to grab whatever food is convenient, not necessarily nutritious.

A good way to lose weight is to enroll for an activity program - this should be interesting for the youth too. Such activities may be group sports like basketball, tennis, swimming, dance or gymnastic classess which are excellent for the body. The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles, in partnership with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Sports Basketball Organization offers an exciting basketball program for all ages. The participants receive individual instructions in dribbling, passing, rebounding, and shooting. It gives the youths a wonderful opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the sports and of course work hard to keep the fat down. Apart from basketball, there are several other low activity games for those youths who are less athletic.

There is also a trend of doing exercises at home among the youths. There is nothing wrong in this, but at least such activity should be supervised. Injuries are most common in home gyms where the youths are playing around with equipment. Weight equipment can be heavy and dangerous. Inappropriate handling of such equipment may lead to serious injury and short to long- term damage. Those who do not have adequate experience and supervision may attempt too much weight or even drop the equipment on themselves. Training sessions should be appropriate for the age group and should fit the individual.
